The Berber rug is the work of Amazigh women from Morocco's Atlas mountains and plains. Woven from sheep's wool using techniques passed down through generations, each rug carries the motifs of its region: diamonds, broken lines, protective symbols. Hand-knotted or flat-woven, it is never mass-produced: no two rugs are ever the same.
The Beni Ouarain, thick and plush, is recognisable by its cream background and brown or black graphic lines. The Mrirt, more tightly knotted, has a lower pile, great density and often tone-on-tone motifs. The kilim, flat-woven with no pile, is light, colourful and especially practical in high-traffic areas. In a living room, choose a size that at least the front legs of the sofa can rest on; under a table, allow 60 cm all around. A thick rug like the Beni Ouarain brings softness to a bedroom or living room, while a Mrirt or a kilim is better suited to high-traffic areas. Can't find the perfect size? Turn it over: on a hand-knotted rug, the pattern shows on the back and the knots are slightly irregular. A machine-made rug has a glued or perfectly uniform back. The wool of a handmade rug is natural, dense and supple.
A 200 × 300 cm rug suits most living rooms: at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs can rest on it. In a large room, a 250 × 350 cm rug ties the space together better.
Vacuum without a rotating brush, in the direction of the pile. For stains, blot quickly with a clean cloth and a little lukewarm water, without rubbing. Professional cleaning every one to two years keeps it soft and its colours bright.
