Discover custom-madeUnlike knotted rugs such as the Beni Ouarain, a kilim is flat-woven: coloured weft threads pass between the warp threads and form the pattern directly, with no pile. In Morocco, these woven rugs are also called hanbel. This ancestral technique produces thin, supple and often reversible pieces decorated with diamonds, stripes and geometric motifs.
With no pile, a kilim traps neither dust nor crumbs: it is easy to care for and suits high-traffic rooms. Being light, it can be moved, rolled and stored effortlessly. Woven in wool, it stays warm while adding a colourful, graphic touch to the room.
In a dining room, a kilim is ideal: chairs slide without catching. In a hallway or entrance, its low profile keeps doors from rubbing. It also layers beautifully over a larger plain rug for a textured look, much loved in bohemian interiors.
A knotted rug (such as a Beni Ouarain or Mrirt) is made of thousands of knots that form a pile. A kilim is flat-woven: it has no pile, so it is thinner, lighter and often reversible.
Being light and flat, a kilim can slip on wooden or tiled floors. We recommend a non-slip underlay, which also adds comfort and extends the life of the rug.
Vacuum both sides without a rotating brush and shake it out regularly outdoors. For stains, blot with a damp cloth without rubbing. Turn it around from time to time for even wear.
